The Parent Perspective : Together for Our Children: Navigating Drug Prevention

Updated: Sep 25

Dear Parents,

We hope this finds you and your loved ones well.

“Parenting can be the greatest job on earth—and the toughest. You want your children to be healthy, but you worry about what they will do when faced with the decision to try drugs.” (Growing up Drug Free: A Parent’s Guide to Substance Use Prevention 2024. DEA)

The publication, “Growing up Drug Free: A Parent’s Guide to Substance Use Prevention” provides information about substance use among children, adolescents, and young adults; drugs that are being used are discussed; risk factors that may lead to drug use; recommendations of how to talk to children about the dangers of drugs; and what to do if you suspect that your child is using drugs.

Many years ago, parents did not have access to resources and information about drugs that are available today. Education is key to the prevention of drug use. It is essential for you to be informed so that you can help your child stay on a healthy path. We urge you to educate yourself and reach out for help when you need it.

The publication is free and can be downloaded on the DEA website: DEA.gov. The link is:

Remember, we all have the same goal—to help our children be healthy, happy, and successful in life.
