Dear Parents,
Dear Parents,
According to statistics, more than 2.5 million middle and high school students are vaping in the United States. Having knowledge about what a vape is and the signs of use are important for you to know so that you can educate your child.
“Vaping devices are battery-operated devices that people use to inhale an aerosol, which typically contains nicotine (though not always), flavorings, and other chemicals.”
A vape device has four parts, including a cartridge reservoir or pod that holds a liquid that contains nicotine, flavoring, and chemicals; a heating element; a battery; and a mouthpiece for inhaling. Vapes may not look like tobacco products. Some are as small as a USB flash drive and look like one. They can also look like pens. Most vapes contain the amount of nicotine equal to twenty cigarettes. They may contain fruit or flower scents along with other chemicals and metal.
Signs that your child may be vaping include changes in behavior or mood, unfamiliar technology, irritability or restlessness, increased thirst, and nosebleeds.
The information presented was obtained from The Center for Tobacco Products, The American Lung Association, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC.gov) and The American Lung Association (lung.org) provide resources for parents about vaping.
Sincerely,
The S.A.R.A. Staff
